It’s very common for young people to have disagreements with their parents regarding their appearance. But what if it’s your in-laws expressing dissatisfaction with how you look? Should you alter yourself to meet their expectations, or should you remain authentic to your true self?

Well, Megan, one of our readers, currently faced this predicament.

Here is what she shared:

” Hi, I need your advice on the following situation. I’m happily married to a man who is 10 years older than me. We live in a nice house with a pool and a hot tub that I enjoy after a long, busy working day. I usually swim, get in the hot tub, sunbathe in a bikini, and walk around the house in shorts and a crop top.

Recently my mother-in-law came to stay with us for a month. She is from an older generation, very conservative and sometimes passive-aggressive. So now my husband insists I don’t show off in a bikini when his mom is home and that I dress up more when we have meals together.

This irritates me. I don’t think that my outfits are harming anyone. I don’t want to be rude, but this is my house and I want to be free here and relax the way I want. I told my husband that his mom is a guest in our house and I don’t want to change my behavior. My mental state suffers because of these limits. I think it’s prudish.

Moreover, in general, I try to accommodate my MIL by cooking her meat, even though I’m vegetarian, and I also moved my office setup to get her a room that is more comfortable.

Am I wrong that I think about my personal comfort in my own house?
