Retiree Decides To Spend Rest Of Life At Holiday Inn Since It’s Cheaper Than A Senior Home

A 64-year-old man has made it clear that he has a very different plan for his future as a retiree. Rather than spend his time in a senior home, he opts to live out the rest of his life in a hotel.

Terry Robison is a resident of Spring, Texas, and he was unwilling to accept that a senior home was the only option he had after retirement.

Furthermore, when he compared the cost of living in a hotel to the cost of staying in a retirement home, he found out that he was better off spending his time at a hotel.

Robinson Plans On Spending The Rest Of His Life At Holiday Inn
The elderly man shared details of his plan on Facebook:

“With the average cost for a nursing home care costing $188.00 per day, there is a better way when we get old and too feeble. I’ve already checked on reservations at the Holiday Inn. For a combined long-term stay discount and senior discount, it’s $59.23 per night.”

He noted that senior homes were $128.77 more expensive than the hotel and that this extra cash can be used to enjoy lunch, dinner, and special movies on TV. Holiday Inn also offers Robinson a spa, a swimming pool, a workout room, and many other perks he might not get at a retirement home.

Holiday Inn offers him basic things like soap, toothpaste, razors, and shampoo. He also noted that $5 tips would have the entire staff “scrambling to help.”

He also likes that he gets treated like a customer at the hotel, as opposed to being treated like a patient in a retirement home.

To top it off, his social life extends far beyond the hotel. Hotel Inn has a city bus stop close by, and seniors like him get free rides. On such trips, he gets to meet new people and enjoy a change of scenery whenever he wants.

He even gets an opportunity to dine at excellent restaurants nearby. Robinson also gets to visit relatives and friends in different places without restrictions.

He can even move to another Holiday Inn if he feels like it.

The list of perks went on, with Robison stating that maintenance issues that plague retirement homes are no longer an issue for him now that he is staying at a Holiday Inn. For instance, broken TVs, light bulbs, and other things are fixed quickly and with an apology to boot.

Seniors in retirement homes don’t enjoy such benefits.

Holiday Inn Vs. Retirement Home
Robinson made other comparisons between Holiday Inn and retirement homes. He noted that nursing homes have long waiting lists.

In a Holiday Inn, you can make a reservation and check-in on the same day.

The only significant benefit hotels have over retirement homes is the level of care senior homes offer. Robinson is aware of this fact and noted that he would not be entirely on his own.

The inn has security, daily room service, and a maid who checks on him to ensure he is okay. In case of anything, they can call an ambulance “Or the undertaker.”

He went on to say that if he fell and broke a hip, Medicare would pay for it, and Holiday Inn would upgrade him to a suite for the rest of his life.

Robinson ended his post by asking: “What more could I ask for?”

Holiday Inn did not talk to Robinson after his post, but they spoke to the media. They pointed out that they were unaware of how he had arrived at his budget calculations and that they were looking forward to welcoming him when he gets to his “golden age.”

They pointed out that he forgot to mention that, at Holiday Inn, kids eat for free. Holiday Inn noted that the charges Robinson was referring to ($59 a night) change based on the location of the Holiday Inn, among other factors.

This is the only flaw in Robinson’s plan.

What Do Experts Think?
Many experts are not for Robinson’s plan. As far as they are concerned, there is more to senior living than having a nice place to spend your final years.

Additionally, they pointed out that COVID might complicate issues in a big way. There’s also the cost issue, with the prices offered at Holiday Inn being beyond what some seniors can afford.

Experts also mentioned that Robinson’s logic is based on the assumption that there is nothing else to do but check-in and out of a Holiday Inn, which is inaccurate.

It was also noted that a sense of purpose is important for seniors, which is why some volunteer, explore their artistic side and take care of their grandkids. At senior homes, they also get assistance with daily activities.

Seniors can’t get this experience at a Holiday Inn.

For instance, they get help with their medicine and activities like bathing, dressing, and rehabilitation. Senior homes also ensure that residents get three meals a day.

Still, living in a hotel with a proper budget is possible. The issue is that hotels don’t offer mental stimulation or do things that promote long-term companionships.

Additionally, maids are not skilled at spotting some of the dangers seniors might face.

That said, senior homes are mostly intended for people who need regular attention because they are ill or disabled. Otherwise, senior homes allow residents to live independently, engage in recreational activities, and get medical assistance when necessary.

So, at the end of the day, an individual gets to decide whether a hotel or a senior home is the best option based on their specific needs.

Robinson responded to the critics and said that he intended to stay at the hotel because he was physically and mentally fit to do so. He does not see why someone in his condition should choose to stay in a retirement center.

He also pointed out that he wrote the comment for comedic effect and is still unsure what his final retirement plan will be. Nevertheless, Robinson clarified that he had not ruled out living in a Holiday Inn as a retiree.
