13-Year-Old Builds Own House For $1.5k, Reveals 89 Sq Ft Masterpice When He Opens Door

An Unusual Path: A 13-Year-Old Builds His Dream Tiny Home

In the maze of adolescence, 13-year-olds typically grapple with school and pastimes.

But for Luke Thill from Dubuque, Iowa, these formative years set the stage for an incredible journey – creating his very own tiny home.

Now 17, Luke’s captivation with the tiny house movement began early, sparked by his YouTube discoveries.

With his parents’ endorsement, he directed his efforts towards crafting his dream abode in his family’s backyard, raising a $1,500 budget through a summer of various jobs.

“The path wasn’t short or straightforward,” Luke confesses, reflecting on his ambitious endeavor. His father’s contribution was in planning and construction, while his mother lent her skills in interior design. The local community’s support also proved instrumental, with numerous materials gifted or bartered for his services.

The sweat and time paid off; after eighteen months of unwavering commitment, Luke’s 89-square-foot tiny home stood completed. It came equipped with a working kitchen, housing a stove and a mini-fridge, a living area with a fold-down dining table, and a snug loft serving as a bedroom.

More Than Just a Tiny Home: A Hub for Gatherings

Although the tiny house wasn’t meant for permanent living, it quickly transformed into a delightful place for social gatherings. “My friends and I often convene here. We watch films, prepare meals, chill out, or indulge in games,” Luke recalls. The functional kitchen even facilitated a family Thanksgiving dinner, adorned with all customary accompaniments.

The Tiny House Journey: Just the Beginning

Luke’s escapade into the world of tiny homes didn’t stop there. At the age of 14, he collaborated with his twin brother, Cole, on a new venture – constructing a tiny teardrop camper. This 36-square-foot travel mate would complement their adventures. With Cole steering the construction process, Luke brought his tiny house experience to the table, offering advice and assistance.

The brothers invested $2,500 in the teardrop camper, an expenditure Luke assures was worthwhile. Upon its completion, they’ve embarked on over 50 camping trips, exploring diverse locales across the nation.

“Each project carries immense significance to me, each presenting its unique set of obstacles and triumphs,” Luke says. His tiny house, in particular, holds a cherished spot in his heart.

Looking Ahead: Luke’s Future Aspirations

Luke’s innovative journey is far from over. Although he’s presently a high school junior, his ambitions reach far beyond traditional fields like engineering or architecture. He envisions a future profession where he can assist others, with aspirations of becoming a paramedic.

To Luke, the sphere of tiny homes and its supportive community will remain a vital part of his life. This unique expedition has equipped him with precious insights and abilities, molding him into a determined young adult with a passion for making a positive impact.
